Health Sciences Centre

The Department of Spiritual Care at the Health Sciences Centre will respond to requests for service by patients or their families. If you are to be admitted to HSC, Admitting Clerks will ask you if you would like to receive a visit from a Clergy or Volunteer of your own faith group. If the answer is yes, they will ask you to sign a form to that effect. Make sure that you sign this form. If that form is not signed, your name will not appear on the Catholic list.

If you know in advance that you will be admitted, call your parish office to advise your Pastor or Volunteers, should you wish to receive a visit from them. If you are unable to call yourself, ask a family member or a friend to call for you. It would be even better if you could let your parish office know the floor, room number, and the facility that you are in, i.e., General, Women's, Rehab, PsycHealth, or Children's, once you are admitted.

Once admitted, it is also possible to access spiritual and sacramental support from the Department of Spiritual Care. In order to do so, ask any staff member, preferably your nurse, to contact the Spiritual Care Department for you. Do not assume that you will automatically receive a visit from a Chaplain if you do not request to see one. Furthermore, requests and referrals will receive a quicker response than waiting or expecting a visit without prior request.

After business hours, a Chaplain is on-call for emergencies. This person can be contacted through the Unit Staff or through the Hospital Paging Operator. All our Chaplains are trained to provide interfaith ministry, support, and prayers. Priests are called only for emergency sacramental ministry, through the On-Call Chaplain.
