Misericordia Health Centre

Misericordia is a Catholic Health Care Facility founded by the Misericordia Sisters in 1898. Established as a Maternity Hospital with special attention to care of single mothers, Misericordia has, until 1999 also been known as a General Hospital. Changes within the health care system have brought about a change in the focus of care we provide to the people of Manitoba.

The services we provide may be categorized into four main program areas:

  1. Interim and Long Term Care
Individuals who are waiting for a place in a personal care home live with us on an Interim Care Unit until their personal care home becomes available. These Interim Care Units are located in the former hospital patient rooms. The newly constructed (2000) Misericordia Place Personal Care Home at 44 Furby St. is home to 100 residents.

  2. Urgent Care and Out Patient Clinics
Non life threatening medical concerns are addressed by Doctors, Nurses, along with a variety of other disciplines.

  3. Ophthalmology
Misericordia is the Centre of Excellence for Eye Care in the Province of Manitoba. While most patients are seen on an out patient basis, some medical conditions require admission.

  4. Health Links
This innovative service allows people to call for advice on the type of medical treatment they should pursue.

Misericordia operates two sites, the main Health Centre building and the Personal Care Home on Furby St.. Each building has it's own chapel which is available for personal prayer as well as religious services. Schedules of the weekly services are posted at the entrance to each chapel, and may also be found on Resident Units.

Residents are encouraged to participate in as normal a life as possible, and for this reason are encouraged to attend Mass in the Chapel if they wish to receive communion. For those who are bed ridden, or too ill to leave their unit, communion may be brought to them.

The Sacrament of the Sick is celebrated every 3 months in each of the Chapels, and is available upon the request of a Resident or family. Individuals preparing for eye surgery may request a visit for the sacrament before surgery at their Pre-Operation Assessment visit, or by calling the Spiritual Care Office (788-8283).

Each of the Resident Care Units has a Spiritual Care Provider that may be contacted by calling the Spiritual Care Office (788-8283), or through the Nursing Staff on the Resident Unit. In addition to the Liturgy and Individual Visits, Spiritual Care staff provide Bible Study and Spiritual Growth groups for residents.

To comply with the Provincial Legislation regarding Personal Health Information all residents admitted to Misericordia Health Centre, or Misericordia Place must provide written consent to be included on the list that Priests and other Parish Visitors will use to establish their visiting list. Those designated to act on behalf of a resident must provide this consent at the time of completing admission papers.
