Share Lent

January 30, 2002

To the Faithful of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg

The Share Lent Campaign is the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace's important annual fund raiser. It is a great opportunity for our Archdiocesan Church to enter into the spirit of Lent.

The forty day preparation of the Resurrection of Jesus and our sharing in it through baptism calls each of us to prayer, fasting and almsgiving. In our tradition fasting and almsgiving have always been connected. We use less so that we have something to share with the poor.

I think we are all aware of the tremendous poverty which is experienced by so many of our brothers and sisters in the third world, especially children and women. Oftentimes we feel so helpless in the face of such suffering. Share Lent gives everyone of us a very important means to doing what we can to help. It also enables us, as the Church, to care and to serve in the name of our Lord.

Thanking you for all you can do for the poor of the world, I am

Fraternally yours,

+ V. James Weisgerber
Archbishop of Winnipeg
