Share LentFebruary 3, 2003 My sisters and brothers in Christ, Once again it is the time of the year when we turn our minds and hearts to the annual Share Lent Campaign, sponsored by the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace. I am happy to be able to encourage your active support for this important work of our Church. This year's theme is "The Earth is for All". This is one of the foundation stones of all of the Church's teaching on social justice. The earth, in all its richness, has been created for the benefit of all human persons. It is painful for all of us to realize that so many of God's children are deprived of any sharing in the wonders of creation. Through the complications of history and through patterns of international trade so many people are kept in unbelievable, unacceptable poverty. They deserve more, we can do better! Development and Peace is an instrument of the Catholic Church in Canada to respond to the challenge of world poverty and the injustice which causes it. Through the generous contribution of Catholics and matching grants from various government agencies, C.C.O.D.P. partners with communities in poor countries to develop projects which not only alleviate poverty, but also bring dignity and empowerment to the participants. The literature provided by D and P give wonderful examples of how our organization works. Please be generous! Remember our Lord's invitation: "Whatever you do for the least of these you do for me" (Matt. 25). Fraternally yours in Our Lord, V. James Weisgerber Back to Letters & Articles Main Page
