Public Way of the Cross

History of the PWTC in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg

In 1988 a group of students and teacher got together with the Office of Youth Ministry at the Archdiocese of Winnipeg (under the direction of Joan Kropelnicki, the Director of Youth Ministry) and planned a pilgrimage through downtown Winnipeg. The purpose was to increase awareness of injustices in our society and remind us of our duty as Christians to protect and help those less fortunate than ourselves. This pilgrimage took the form of a modern Way of the Cross. It was comprised of eight stations beginning at Old Market Square and ending at St. Mary's Cathedral. The stations ranged from the Health Sciences Centre and a reflection on the failure to recognize the sanctity of human life to the Remand Centre. A prayer asking us to recognize the beauty in all our brothers and sisters and help them to see that someone cares about them. About 400 people of all ages from across the city came out to this event.

Since this initiative in 1988, a Public Way of the Cross takes place every Good Friday morning in the Archdiocese of Winnipeg. A different parish in the city of Winnipeg hosts this event to remind us of our call as Christians to follow the way of Christ.
