What is a Church of Communion?
"One of the principle teachings of Vatican II is church as communion. Understanding the Church as communion means that we are called to reflect the life of the Trinity. The persons of the Trinity – Father, Son and Spirit – are integral to one another and exist in self-giving love. If we are to live church as communion we are called to reflect the life of the Trinity; each of us is called to live in relationship, not only with God, but also with one another."
- Archbishop James Weisgerber, Building a Church of Communion: The Pastoral Vision of the Archdiocese of Winnipeg.
A church of communion:
- Has unity as a goal, while recognizing the diversity of its members
- Is collaborative
- Recognizes the gifts in its members and allows people to nurture and develop these gifts.
All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the good-will of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. [Acts 2: 44-47]
